The 5 Gallon Bulk Container is the Most Economical Choice for Large Stainless Passivation Jobs

CitriSurf® 77 is a high quality blend of chemicals formulated for the cleaning and passivation of stainless steel products. CitriSurf 77 is specifically designed to provide a portable, low cost and efficient removal of contaminants and all free iron from the surface of stainless steel, providing the highest chrome oxide levels possible.

Also available in convenient 22 oz. spray bottles and one-gallon containers.

Shipping Weight 50.0 lbs.

Application Procedure: CitriSurf 77 is an excellent cleaner by itself for many cleaning and passivation processes. However, to assure best results the parts or areas to be passivated may be cleaned with an appropriate cleaning solution prior to treatment with CitriSurf 77 solution, especially when heavy grease and oils are present. If there is rust on the surface that must be removed, you may want to use CitriSurf 77 Plus which has additional additives to aid in rust removal.

The parts or areas to be cleaned and passivated should be sprayed, immersed or wiped with CitriSurf 77 to completely wet the surfaces, especially in crevices or in areas where rust or corrosion may have occurred. The surface must be soaked or left moist with the CitriSurf 77 solution for a period of 15-30 minutes at room temperature. After soaking, rinse the surface with clean water. The surface can then be wiped dry with a clean cloth or appropriate absorbent medium. Allow the surface to air dry prior to use. CitriSurf 77 will not harm stainless steel appliances or surfaces, and will enhance the brightness when used as directed.

Although CitriSurf products will not harm most metal appliances or surfaces, and will enhance the brightness when used as directed, test a small area before full application.

Q. What is the difference between Citrisurf 77 and Citrisurf 77 Plus?

A. Both passivate stainless steel. The Citrisurf 77 Plus also contains a rust remover.

Q. Are there any surfaces that CitriSurf is NOT compatible with?

A. CitriSurf will cause damage to the surfaces of concrete, carbon steel, zinc, and galvanized steel. Avoid exposure of these materials to CitriSurf and rinse immediately if there is an inadvertent spill onto these materials. CitriSurf can be used to clean carbon steel surfaces if care is taken to avoid overexposure, we recommend extra dilution and room temperature operation. PVC pipe and fittings made from copper, brass, or bronze are not recommended for long term use with CitriSurf.

Q. Are CitriSurf products safe to use on food equipment, do they leave a coating or residue?

A. CitriSurf may be used for these applications. When properly rinsed, no CitriSurf remains on the surface. The protective passive layer is formed from the metal itself.

Q. Will CitriSurf damage the surface of the stainless steel?

A. Unlike nitric acid based passivation, CitriSurf does not etch stainless steel and will not change the surface finish.

Q. What is the coverage of a five gallon container?

A. Coverage is approximately 1250 square feet.

Q. What is stainless steel passivation?

A. Read our article on Stainless Steel Passivation.

Q. Are CitriSurf products USDA approved?

A. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service has eliminated the requirement for prior approval of nonfood compounds for use in food processing plants. They now only require the product to be safe and effective under the conditions of use. This allows CitriSurf products to be used in food processing plants, saving money and improving safety. The USDA documentation on the requirement change can be found on their website.

Q. I have a set of 1820's antique brass andirons with lots of build up. What can you suggest that won't harm them?

A. Our CitriSurf 77 works very well on brass beds, we are told (see customer testimonial), and so it probably will do a good job on the brass andirons. We have no personal experience with brass, although some customers use our products on brass and bronze parts in industrial settings. We have sold quite a few bottles to people like yourself who have read the postings online of people who have used CitriSurf and had good results. There are many coatings placed over newer brass fixtures, we don’t believe that CitriSurf 77 will work on these types of materials.

Q. I have a stainless steel railing outside. What is the best product to protect and clean it so it doesn’t rust in time?

A. If you do not live near a coastline you're probably safe. If you do live near the coast, the salt air is a bad environment for stainless. One of the best things you can do is rinse it down with fresh water and SaltAway periodically to remove any salt. If you ever start to see some discoloration on the steel ("tea staining" corrosion), you should get some of our product CitriSurf 2310, which is very safe and easy to use and will take off the corrosion and fully repassivate the surface to forestall the return of that corrosion for as long as possible.
